Perranporth - 1 - 2 - Newquay - Tuesday 25th August 2009

A storming second half comeback by Perranporth came to nothing as the table-topping Peppermints held on to claim all 3 points at Ponsmere Valley on Tuesday night. The visitors took the lead on 10 minutes when Sam McKune headed home from a corner. The game was evenly poised for the rest of the first half but Newquay delivered a sucker punch on the stroke of half-time when McKune was again allowed to head in from a corner. Perranporth quickly reduced the arrears after the break through Ian Gosling's penalty. Kayne Trevaskis brought a fine save from visiting keeper Luke Payne before Lawrence hit the outside of the post. In a frantic finale Payne was the hero with two brilliant saves from Harris headers.

Perranporth - 5 - 1 - Godolphin Atlantic - Monday 31st August 2009

Perranporth made it three wins out of four as the leapt to the top of the table above Newquay and Porthleven on goal difference after this emphatic victory on Bank Holiday Monday. The new league leaders opened their account after 12 minutes when Rob Stapleton headed home Ian Gosling's free kick. The visitors levelled on the half hour with a breakaway goal coolly finished by Phil Lowry. But Gosling restored the home side's advantage on the stroke of half time when he unleashed a fierce shot into the bottom left corner. Justin Miles' cross was half volleyed in by Kayne Trevaskis at the far post 10 minutes after the break and Gosling made it 4 - 1 after a clever interchange of passes between Davies and Trevaskis. Mike Cain completed the scoring five minutes from time with a header at the far post from a Gosling corner.

Hayle - 1 - 3 - Perranporth - Saturday 12th September 2009

Perranporth joint player-manager Ian Gosling may be reluctant to talk about potential back to back league titles just yet, but after another competant display from his side on Saturday, he will no doubt be quietly confident that they will be in the mix come May. Gosling revealed a third or fourth place finish would be an achievement in the Ponsmere Valley club's first season in Peninsula League football. On Saturday's evidence that's the least they can expect. Deservedly, the claimed their fourth win of the season, although they were given far from an easy ride from a Hayle side, who may well have got more from the game had their forwards had remembered to bring their shooting boots. How Hayle could have done with a Kayne Trevaskis in their side. The Perranporth striker was at his sometimes unplayable best and two goals were just reward for his man of the match display. The only blot on his copybook was a howler of a miss in the closing stages to deny him his hat-trick. It took a while for both sides to get going in the energy sapping conditions at sunny Trevassick Park. But it was the visitors who looked the most potent going forward, with Trevaskis stretching to slide an effort inches wide after 21 minutes. Strike partner Steve Brewer then failed to find the target from 12 yards when he volleyed over. But just as Hayle appeared to be getting some kind of foothold in the game, they found themselves trailing at half-time thanks to Trevaskis' 39th minute minute beauty. As Hayle's defenders stood off, the forward let fly with a superb effort into the top corner. And seven minutes into the second half Trevaskis doubled Perranporth's lead with a brilliant solo effort, weaving his way past a couple of defenders before tucking the ball past David Cheal. Chris Wolstencroft gave Hayle some hope of a revival when he met Dan Magee's cross with a diving header in the 64th minute. But those hopes were soon dashed when Davies planted a firm header past Cheal from Gosling's pinpoint cross from the right. Trevaskis should have had his hat-trick with five minutes remaining but he somehow managed to hit the ball straight at Cheal from six yards.

Perranporth - 1 - 2 - Vospers Oak Villa - Saturday 19th September 2009

Perranporth slipped to their second league defeat of the season against title rivals Vospers on Saturday. After a goalless first half the home side took the lead through Steve Brewer following a poor attempted clearance by Andy Barnes. Vospers were soon level, though, when Jason Beynon fired home after good work by Craig Brenton. And Beynon added a second when, despite the initial save from Danny Burrows, the midfielder followed up to put the visitors 2 - 1 up. Perranporth fought back strongly in their search for an equiliser and Vospers had Tony Bouch to thank for his goal-line clearance, and moments later the woodwork came to the rescue for the visitors, who hung on to claim an impressive win.

Perranporth - 1 - 1 - Camelford - Saturday 17th October 2009

The importance of having more than just a strong starting XI was highlighted at Ponsmere Valley on Saturday as the absence of several first-team players left Perranporth counting the cost. Penzance's promotion from division one west last season owed much to a strong squad that was capable of dealing with such scenarios. Admittedly, there may never be another occasion this season when Perranporth are without five key first-team players. But with Justin Harrington, Steve Brewer, Danny Burrows, Mike Cain and Kayne Trevaskis all unavailable, the Pilchards struggled to produce the kind of performance that has seen them soar to the top of the table in their first season in Peninsula League football. However, what is also important to remember is that, despite their problems, Perranporth still had enough to take a point from a good Camelford side that moved up to second following Saturday's draw. But despite still being able to call on the creative skills of the likes of Mike Davies and Ian Gosling, the home side struggled to produce the kind of fluidity in their play that has helped them gain eight wins from their opening 11 games. Joint player managers Gosling and Rusty Rowson both came close with efforts early on. There was a let off for Perranporth when Camelford striker Mark Gusterson saw his effort rebound off the bar an into the arms of goalkeeper Ben Mitchell. Perranporth striker Barry Leete, who had scored three goals in his previous to outings, then found the top of the bar with an effort from the edge of the area. Minutes later, though, Perranporth were in front when Ben Goldring's cross eluded Camelford keeper Josh Colwill and dropped into the net, with the help of the upright. Perranporth had chances to increase their lead, before Camelford fought back well in the sceond half and Gusterson's header from Paul Menhinick's corner was enough to earn the visitors a deserved share of the spoils.

Millbrook - 1 - 2 - Perranporth - Saturday 31st October 2009

Two second half goals saw Perranporth come from behind at Mill Park on Saturday to chalk up another victory on the road that keeps them six points clear at the top of the table. The home side to the lead against the run of play after 20 minutes when Lewis Vines beat visiting keeper Danny Burrows with a fierce drive into the top corner. The visitors nearly replied with a quick equiliser when Mike Davies hit the bar from Ian Gosling's pass. Instead they had to wait until 10 minutes into the second half to draw level when Kayne Trevaskis side footed home from a Gosling corner. Dean Harris had a shot cleared off the line and Rusty Rowson headed just wide as Perranporth went in search of the winner, which came 15 minutes from time when Harris lashed home Gosling's cross.

Perranporth - 1 - 0 - Mousehole - Saturday 2nd January 2010

Perranporth returned to the top of the division one west table, but they managed it by the narrowist of margins against a plucky Mousehole side at Ponsmere Valley on Saturday. After this latest less than convincing display, joint managers Ian Gosling and Rusty Rowson will be hoping that a steady run of games will help get the Pilchards' title bid back on track. With a paltry two league games played since the end of October it has, of course, been difficult for Perranporth to continue their momentum in their quest for premier division football next season. And with injuries and suspensions forcing Gosling's and Rowson's hand further, it is easy to sympathise with their current predicament. But with league games against Callington, Foxhole and Newquay to come in January, Perranporth have an opportunity to reaffirm their pre-season billing as title favourites. They have done little to enhance their reputation as the division's top dogs in recent weeks, following the defeat at Godolphin last month and Saturday's nervy victory over bottom of the table Mousehole. But with several key players due back from injury in the coming weeks, Gosling and Rowson will be hopeful of overcoming their recent dip in form. Despite their dominance on Saturday, Perranporth lacked their usual fluidity in attack and a rugged Mousehole rearguard were content on sweeping up anything they could throw at them. Kevin Lawrence and Matt Moore failed to find the target with efforts early on, while Mousehole goalkeeper Ryan Gendall was equal to Mike Davies' 11th minute volley. Rowson was unsuccessful with a couple of first half attempts and Gendall was again well positioned to save from Barry Leete. Eventually, the breakthrough came in the 58th minute and there was nothing Gendall could do to keep out Davies' superb 58th minute header from Sam Moustrides' excellent cross from the right. Gendall was equal moments later from another Davies header as Perranporth finally began to show some fluency going forward in the final third. But after Davies, Rowson and Lawrence all wasted efforts to add to their lead the home side were almost made to pay when Danny Burrows pulled off a last ditch save to deny Jon Tonkin following a slip by Perranporth skipper Dean Harris.

Perranporth - 0 - 1 - St. Blazey - Saturday 23rd January 2010

If proof were needed of what the Cornwall Senior Cup means to the county's footballers then its importance was illustrated in a truly enthralling afternoon at Ponsmere Valley on Saturday. With these two ambitious sides riding high in their respective divisions this third round tie had all the ingredients for a cup classic. It certainly didn't disappoint the 150 plus crowd who were fortunate enough to witness all that is good about Cornish football. There was no let up from either side, in terms of commitment. But you wouldn't expect anything less when you consider this tie pitted former Truro City team-mates Ian Gosling and Glynn Hooper up against each other. The pair enjoyed unrivalled success at Treyew Road as City went on to lift the FA Vase at Wembley in 2007. And since taking their first tentative steps into management, these two good friends can do no wrong. Hooper may have come out on top on Saturday, but Gosling will take plenty of encouragment from his whole-hearted display that bodes well for the remainder of their league campaign. With the return of several key players, including former professional Justin Harrington, Perranporth took command in the half an hour. However, and perhaps typical of this intriguing cup tie, the game was settled by a controversial goal on the stroke of half-time. Lee Bradd epitomised what ws a full-blooded cup tie on Saturday. Outstanding along side Neil Burton in the heart of the St. Blazey defence, he also had a hand in the visitors' winner. Zalick's strike in first half stoppage time was the turning point in the game according to Perranporth joint manager Rusty Rowson. Because prior to that Perranporth appeared to be in control with Harrington, Dean Harris and Mikey Davies all coming close to scoring for the home side. And there was an almighty let off for the visitors when goalkeeper Tom Blackler collided with Davies when the midfielder was through on goal. There was nothing much Blackler knew about the collision, although he still earned a yellow card for his troubles. Minutes later St. Blazey were in front as referee Ian Roberts again found himself at the centre of attention. As Bradd made a nuisance of himself in the Perranporth box, the ball appeared to bounce up off the defender's arm before falling out to Zalick, who smashed his effort in off the underside of the bar. Perranporth never really recovered from what was to prove a crucial decision as the visitors took a hold of the game in the second half. And only the post denied St. Blazey a second when Neil Slateford had Danny Burrows beaten with a wonderful free-kick. The woodwork again came to Perranporth's rescue when Josh Higman volleyed from a tight angle in what would have been one of the goals of the season. But Zalick's controversial goal was to prove enough as St. Blazey booked their place in the fourth round.

Mousehole - 0 - 5 - Perranporth - Saturday 6th February 2010

Two first half goals apiece for Ian Gosling and Dean Harris settled the outcome before half time as Perranporth retained third in the table. New signing from Truro City Joe McQuade set up the opener for player manager Gosling after 10 minutes and Harris doubled the lead midway through the half with a powerful header from Gosling's corner. Home defender James Tonkin was somewhat harshly adjudged to have handled in the area on the half hour, but Gosling made no mistake with the resulting penalty. And it got worse for the seagulls just before the break when McQuade played in Harris who scored with a cheeky backheel. The visitors had the last word 10 minutes from time when Mikey Davies slid the ball past Gendall.

Perranporth - 1 - 4 - Dobwalls - Saturday 13th February 2010

A second half hat-trick from Stuart Dunn ended Perranporth's hopes of claiming a place in the semi-finals of the Cornwall Charity Cup at Ponsmere Valley on Saturday. The visitors took the lead after 10 minutes when Jack Bartlett was tripped in the box and Matt Lindsay made no mistake with the resulting penalty. Dobwalls were reduced to 10 men after 35 minutes when Spud Davey was given his marching orders for an illegal tackle. And Perranporth player manager Ian Gosling took full advantage, firing his side level with a curling 25-yard free kick into the far corner five minutes later. Perranporth found themselves a goal down again on 55 minutes when Dunn slid home Spencer Wilson's cross. The visitors went further ahead on 67 minutes as Dunn converted Simon Skews' cross before completing his hat-trick from Bartlett's through ball.
